Bake Element: What a Healthy One Looks Like

Bake elements are the sheathed resistance heaters at the bottom of an electric Viking oven that supply most of the heat on an ordinary bake setting.

as used by Viking Appliance Repair Edmonds, (206) 210-3547

For an Edmonds owner with an electric Viking wall oven or range, a failing bake element usually shows first as slow preheats and pale bottoms, well before the oven stops heating.

Bake elements: what to look for with the oven off and cold — Viking Appliance Repair Edmonds, (206) 210-3547.
What you are looking at Normal Watch Call
Colour of the sheath, cold An even dull grey from end to end Light patches or discoloured spots A blister, crack or split in the sheath
Shape Lies level on its supports A slight sag between supports Drooping onto the floor or pulled at the terminals
Glow on bake, where the element is visible Glows evenly along its length One stretch stays darker than the rest No glow at all, or a spark and a flash
Baking results Bottoms brown in the time the recipe gives Pale bottoms and longer preheats No bottom heat while the broiler still works

Where to look, and when you cannot

Some Viking electric ovens show the element across the oven floor; others keep it out of sight. The service manual for the VESO5271 wall oven family reaches the bake element through an access panel with the door removed, so on those ovens the owner judges it by what comes out of the oven. Viking’s Professional gas self-clean ranges have no bake element at all: their baking heat comes from a U-shaped gas burner at the bottom of the cavity.

Where the element is visible, look with the oven off and completely cold, under a torch, along its full length and at the terminals.

Why part of an element can fail

The element is a coiled wire packed inside a metal sheath. When one stretch thins or the sheath cracks, the oven receives less than full output: preheats drag and bottoms stay pale. An oven whose bake element has died outright can still seem to half work, because the broil element at the top heats when it is selected.

Where owner checks stop

Looking, and the breaker, are the owner’s side. Unscrewing the element or metering it belongs to a Viking wall oven repair visit, where resistance and the terminals are checked. A replacement is priced from the published bake or broil element band.

Bake elements: questions owners ask

Can a bake element fail without the oven going cold?
Yes. A sheath can thin or crack along one stretch while the rest still heats, so the oven warms slowly and bakes unevenly rather than failing outright. Viking Appliance Repair Edmonds measures the element itself before replacing anything, and a visit is booked on (206) 210-3547.
I cannot see a bake element in my Viking oven. Is that normal?
On some models it is. Viking's service manual for the VESO5271 wall oven family reaches the bake element through an access panel once the door is off, so on those ovens you judge it by results. Viking Appliance Repair Edmonds can confirm your layout on (206) 210-3547.
What can I safely check myself?
Look at the element with the oven off and fully cold, and check that the oven's breaker has not tripped. Leave screws, terminals and wiring alone; a resistance test needs the power isolated and the element disconnected. Viking Appliance Repair Edmonds does that part, on (206) 210-3547.
