Convection Fan: Noise, Airflow and Cleaning Around It
For an Edmonds owner baking two trays at once, the fan is what makes the lower tray match the upper one, and a failing fan shows up as uneven batches before it goes quiet.

What the fan does, and what it does not
On Viking’s Professional gas self-clean ranges, convection bake takes heat from the U-shaped bake burner at the bottom of the cavity and a motorised fan at the rear spreads it. On Convection Defrost the same fan runs with no heat at all. A second fan, the cooling fan, runs during self-clean to keep the door lock motor cool. Noise from one says nothing about the other.
Reading the sound and the results
A fresh tick or rub often means something has shifted against the blade or cover; grinding and squealing point to the motor bearings. Silence can be the motor, its wiring, or whatever switches it: the selector on knob-controlled ranges, the electronics on ovens with a control board. What a convection fan repair costs follows from which of those it is — the motor itself has no published band and is quoted after the diagnosis, while a failed control board does carry one.
Cleaning around the cover
Let the oven cool completely, then wipe the rear cover and the wall around it by hand with warm soapy water, rinse and dry. No caustic oven cleaner, steel wool or abrasive powder, for the same reasons they are kept off the porcelain enamel of the cavity. The cover stays on: taking it off to reach the blade or motor is part of Viking wall oven repair and range work alike.

- Is the fan I hear during self-clean the convection fan?
